HAMPTON, Va. – The Morehead City Marlins smacked four home runs en route to a 9-4 victory over the Peninsula Pilots on Wednesday night at War Memorial Stadium.
After trading zeroes the first two innings, Morehead City took the lead with two runs in the third inning. Kyle Skeels (Coastal Carolina) provided the first run of the ballgame with a solo shot to left field. Nick Podkul (Notre Dame) followed with a walk and stole second to put himself in prime position to score easily on Sammy Miller’s (Longwood) single for a 2-0 lead.
Jackson Ware (Mercer) gave the Marlins a 3-0 lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Podkul scored his second run of the game when he came around to score on Derek Olenchuk’s (Newberry) RBI single.
Peninsula finally found the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Conor Davis (Auburn) led off with a single up the middle. After two quick outs, Matt Schneider (Mercyhurst) extended the inning with a single to center. Logan Augustine (Lincoln Memorial) delivered a two-out bloop single to left to score Davis. The team had a chance to push a few more runs across but stranded two in scoring position.
The Marlins responded with a RBI single by Miller to push the lead to 6-1.
In the sixth inning, Sam Griggs (Southern Indiana) delivered a solo home run just over the left field wall to bring the Pilots within four.
Schneider hit a RBI single in the seventh inning to bring the Pilots within three.
Morehead City hit a pair of home runs in the final two innings to give them some breathing room. Mark Castellucci (Montevallo) hit a solo home run to push the lead to 7-3. Will Matthiessen (Stanford) hit a two-run home run to deep center for a 9-3 advantage.
Peninsula tacked on a run in the ninth as Drake McNamara (Southern Indiana) hit a double to score Scott Dubrule (Jacksonville).
After an off day Thursday, the Pilots will host Wilson on Friday night for Fireworks Friday.
