HAMPTON, Va. – The Wilson Tobs defeated the Peninsula Pilots 6-2 in a rain-shortened affair on Friday night at War Memorial Stadium.
Hunter Gore (Liberty) reached on a leadoff walk to start the third inning. After a pair of strikeouts, CJ Ballard (Georgia Southern) hit a triple down the right-field line to put the Tobs on the board. Dawnoven Smith (NC A&T) drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Back-to-back RBI singles by Connor Leonard (App State) and Andre Nnebe (UC Santa Clara) gave the Tobs a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Sam Griggs (Southern Indiana) knocked a one-out single to left field and was immediately followed by Drew Delsignore’s (Mercyhurst) 13th home run of the season. The two-run shot to left field cut the deficit to one.
Wilson plated three more runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead. Two consecutive errors put runners in scoring position before a two-run triple by Nnebe. Jake Holtzapple (North Carolina) put the Tobs up 6-2 with a single.
The two teams played into the bottom of the sixth inning before stopping play because of weather. The game was ultimately called and the score was reverted back to the end of the fifth inning.
Colt Harlow (James Madison) was charged with the loss to fall to 4-2 as Brett Morrison (Lock Haven) picked up his first win of the season to improve to 1-2 on the season.
The Pilots hit the road for three consecutive games starting with Saturday’s tilt against Fayetteville. After an off day on Sunday, the Pilots play a pair of the games in Edenton on Monday and Tuesday. Peninsula will host Wilson and Holly Springs on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, respectively.
