MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Conor Davis hit two home runs and drove in four runs while Drake McNamara added a home run and four RBIs to propel the Pilots to an 8-2 victory over the Morehead City Marlins on Friday night at Big Rock Stadium.
With three teams vying to claim the #1 Seed in the East, the Pilots took care of business behind a strong hitting attack and a trio of pitchers kept the Marlins at bay all night. Drake McNamara (Southern Indiana) and Conor Davis (Auburn) combined for five hits and eight RBIs in the win.
Peninsula jumped out with two runs in the first inning as McNamara continued his strong week with a two-run home run. Logan Augustine (Lincoln Memorial) hit a two-out double before McNamara hit his second homer in as many days.
The two teams kept each other in check until the fourth inning when Davis hit a two-run home run of his own to extend the lead to 4-0. McNamara led off the inning with a single before the bomb by Davis gave the Pilots a comfortable lead.
The two home runs were all the Pilots needed as Collin Liberatore (Pittsburgh) was extremely strong on the bump. The right-hander gave up one run on one hit and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings. He improved to 4-0 on the season with the win.
Morehead City finally got on the board in the sixth inning when they scored on a wild pitch.
Peninsula plated four more runs in the seventh with McNamara and Davis serving as catalysts. Jonathan Embry (Liberty) drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a single by Matt Schneider (Mercyhurst). After a stolen base moved two runners into scoring position, McNamara cashed in with a two-run single. Davis followed with his second two-run home run of the night to put the Pilots ahead 8-1.
Morehead City got a run in the seventh on a wild pitch and couldn’t get any closer as left-hander Braun Miller (Malone) recorded his first save of the season with three innings of one-run ball while striking out four.
Peninsula hosts Edenton in their regular season home finale on Saturday night at War Memorial Stadium before wrapping up the regular season on Monday in Morehead City.
