Pilots Take Flight Over Wilson

Back in action at War Memorial Stadium were the Peninsula Pilots as they played their nemesis the Wilson Tobs.  Sunday's meeting was the 11th time the Tobs and Pilots have squared off this year as the Pilots would explode for six runs to defeat the Tobs for the second time this year by a score of 6-4.

After the Tobs would get two runs in the second and another in the fourth the Pilots would wake up its bats and capitalize on two crucial Wilson errors to get six unanswered runs in the sixth.  The Tobs would fall apart single handily as the Pilots would connect for five hits off of starting pitcher Rick Dodridge and Sam Jew.

Following a lead-off base hit by Chas Crane (Winthrop), Jimmy Rider (Kent State) would tally the Pilots first run in the inning with a RBI single.  Following a walk and the Rider single, center-fielder John Lynch (Norfolk State)  would reach base on a RBI infield single to score Kevin McKague (Army).  Lynch subsequently would be caught in a pickle but would advance to second as Rider would catch the Tobs defense off-guard to give an apparent home steal, but beat the throw to third to allow the Pilots to have runners on second and third.  Josh Wright (Old Dominon) would take advantage on the mental errors by the Wilson players as he would reach first on an error by third baseman Mike Zeblo which allowed Rider to score the tying run.  Ivan Hartle's (Western Kentucky) RBI double to left-field would score the go-ahead as he would touch home plate following a David Coleman (Virginia) RBI single to right-center.

Peninsula's pitching wouid restrict the Tobs to seven hits as Adam Wisniewski (Old Dominion) would look sharp for the Pilots- relieving Coby Cowgill (VMI) in the sixth.  Wisniewski's 1 2/3 inning would be enough for his first win of the year.  Closer Tony Chisman (Georgia Southern) would be brought in-in the eighth  as he would allow one run in the ninth.  As fans rose to their feet with bases loaded on two outs, Chisman would get Jacob Davis to swing at a curve ball for his third save of the year and the Pilots first win against the Tobs at War Memorial Stadium this season; Sam Jew is dealt his fourth loss of the year as he falls to a 1-4 record.

The win is Peninsula's 20th overall, as their record improves to 7-6 in the CPL second half season.  They remain third in the CPL North Division with a half game back of Wilson.  Peninsula is on the road Tuesday July 13 at Outer Banks and return home Wednesday to face Edenton at War Memorial Stadium at 7:05.  To view tonight's statistics, please visit the Coastal Plain League's website www.coastalplain.com/statistics/2010/pen7-11.htm
