Edenton (0) at Peninsula (1)
May 27, 2010 - 07:05 PM

Game Notes »
Baseball in Hampton is back in session.  The lights, the crowd, the crack of the bat, and the excitement all filled War Memorial Stadium Thursday night for the thrilling 10th inning battle between the Peninsula Pilots (2-0) and the Edenton Steamers (0-2).

It was all too familiar for William and Mary’s Kevin Alas, who just the game before started the rally in the top of the seventh inning to help guide the Pilots to its first win of the season.

In a scoreless pitcher’s duel, Alas brought the evening to a sudden and fan pleasing- end with a bases loaded walk-off single to right-center field to give the Pilots a hard-fought win over Edenton in their home opener.  Alas’ one hit on the night separated the two teams, lifting the Pilots to a 2-0 start to the season.

The Pilots connected for five hits off five different Edenton pitchers.  Cam Parsons (Norfolk State), John Lynch (Norfolk State), Mike Mergenthaler (Richmond), Adam McConnell (Richmond), and Alas all belted a hit each.

Old Dominion’s Kyle Hald started on the mound for the Pilots, going six innings, giving up three hits while striking out nine.  The Steamers threatened in the top of the ninth with bases loaded with one out as Norfolk State’s Ryan Shook (1-0) would earn two-out of his six strikeouts for the night-retiring Edenton’s Ian Tomkins and Dan Williams to end the threat.

The Pilots play again on Friday at Wilson and Saturday at Wilmington before returning home to play Petersburg on Monday May 31, at 7 p.m.
